The boxes grow legs
Since the first commit, the entire cast of this game has been four rectangles: a white one you steer and colored ones that want you. As of this pass, everyone has a body.
At sixteen logical pixels, style is silhouette or it is nothing. The sitter stands upright with a slight lean and a messenger bag – the posture of someone who plans to leave, which in this house is characterization. The kids are hunched and asymmetric, head tilted, one arm lower than the other – and every kid is generated with its own seeded wear: one of three body types, a couple of pixels taller or shorter, a deeper hunch, sometimes a missing arm, sometimes a crooked jaw. Same room, same kids, every visit; no two kids quite alike. He versions his children, after all. The recipes drift.
The colors still do the talking: rot-green means wandering, red means chosen-you, and sleepy blue now comes with the pass’s most important frame – a Contained kid curls up and visibly SLEEPS, closed-eye line and all. The spec had exactly one acceptance criterion for that frame: asleep, not dead. It reads asleep. Bedtime has looked like a blue box for two days; now it looks like the thing the whole story says it is.
And it sounds like it, too: the kids moan now – low, breathy, seeded so each kid keeps its own voice, sparse while idling, tighter and higher when one is coming for you – and when you settle a kid in snug, it lets out one last long descending moan and goes quiet, right into the music box. That audio detail cost thirty lines of sine math and is worth more atmosphere than everything else on this page.
A confession for the collection, small but instructive: the first render of the new heads was a featureless dark blob, because at three-by-three pixels an outline plus an eye is the whole head – there was no face left to outline. Pixel art at this size is a subtraction discipline. We subtracted. There are 126 tests now, one of which walks every pixel of every kid in every state and fails the build if any of them ever borrows the sitter’s white. Identity theft: prevented. 860 KB, zero assets, and the boxes have legs.
